Tinder Scams: All You Need to Know About Tinder Catfish

When it comes to places you could be scammed on the internet, many people don’t think of Tinder. But people regularly lose tens of thousands of dollars on dating apps like Tinder. This is due to a massive problem known as romance scams. Romance scams can have a massive financial and psychological impact, and in this article, we’ll break down what a romance scam is, and how to tell if you’re being targeted. So let’s get into it.

How to Tell if The Person You’re Talking to is a Romance Scammer

Although it is difficult to tell if the person you’re talking to is fake, it doesn’t have to be. With Social Catfish, you can find out the truth in seconds. All you need to do is upload a screenshot of the person into the search bar below. Run your first search today!

What is a Tinder Scam

Tinder scams usually come in the form of romance scams. Romance scams are what is known as a scam of confidence or a mass messaging scam (MMS). This is because, in a romance scam, scammers reach out to mass amounts of people through dating apps like Tinder or Bumble, or even through text message or email. Once they establish contact with someone, they begin using their romance scam tactics, such as love bombing. In this tactic, scammers display an overwhelming amount of love and affection for the person and get them hooked on their communication. We have interviewed hundreds of victims of romance scams, and it is extremely common for a victim to say a scammer confessed their love for them within the first few weeks of messaging. And over time, they get used to the idea of the person they met online (the scammer) being in love with them. Not too long after, the victim begins to reciprocate the love. But this is all a cruel trick meant to set up what comes next.

Romance scammers are often remarkably successful in their scams, and there are a few reasons for this.

How to Stay Informed

The world of online dating can be like the wild west. You never know if the person you’re talking to is who they say they are, and new technology comes out every day that makes it easier and easier to fake your identity. The Scamfish newsletter gives you the latest updates on online dating and the world’s craziest catfish stories. Sign up for our newsletter today to join the community!

Romance Scam Photos

The reason romance scams often work so well is that scammers carefully construct their persona, and it all starts with the photos. Scammers look for influencers with many photos that they can steal and create stories about,  then create a Tinder profile using the fake photos. These photos are typically from people who work within specific occupations. Many of which require the person to travel overseas. These professions tend to be soldiers, doctors, oil rig engineers, etc. These jobs provide simple excuses for why the scammer cant partake in activities that would give them away as an imposter. For instance, romance scammers will often claim that they are unable to video chat because they have no connection on an oil rig, on a mission for the government, etc.

The Difference Between Women’s Romance Scam Photos and Men’s Photos

When it comes to the difference between romance scams where the scammer is impersonating women and a romance scam where a scammer is impersonating a man is, the female romance scammer will use sex as a way to lure in their male victims. They often do this by stealing the photos of an adult film actress and keeping the conversation sexually charged. One of the common tactics romance scammers use is sextortion. This is where they get you to send them explicit images, then blackmail you to send them money. In this scam, the extortion never ends. Scammers typically demand money to stop them from sharing the images with your friends and family, but once you have sent the money, they demand more and more until you have nothing left.

Tinder Romance Scams And Crypto

A romance scammer’s main goal is to get you to send them money. This is usually in the form of gift cards or cryptocurrency. This is because both of these methods of payment are untraceable. They usually come up with clever excuses for why they need you to send money in this form. Their story usually has to do with being trapped in prison in a foreign land, having to pay hospital bills, or most commonly, having to pay for an expensive piece of equipment that has broken in their line of work. For oil rig scammers, this is usually some “oil rig part” that they need to buy. These stories can actually be quite costly. Some of these “oil rig parts” they claim to need can cost upwards of $100,000, and many people actually end up sending the money after the scammers assure them that they will be repaid. They never are.

Searching Romance Scammers By Names

Searching romance scammers by name is one of the most difficult traps. Romance scammers create aliases for their persona. Because of this, many people who are being targeted by romance scammers get caught up in trying to search for the person’s name. This will never work because anyone can create a made-up name that no one can find a trail for. For instance, if someone told you that their name was “Trevor Carson” and they stole the Rock’s images, you could search Trevor Carson all day and find nothing for the name, and never see the Rock’s pictures. Meaning you’d never know that the name was made up and the images were stolen.

Because of this, we have a few special searches that are used to bust romance scammers and give them away for what they are.

A reverse image search is a way of searching the internet that allows you to see exactly who the person stole the images from. These searches have helped over 600,000 people find out the truth about the person they met online.  Running a reverse image search is simple. All you need to do is upload an image of the person into the search bar below. It’s important to run a reverse image search be for it’s too late. If you wait too long, the scammer may already have you in their grip. Use the reverse image toolbar below to run your first today!
