World Photo Day: How to Perform a Reverse Image Search

Many people meet and talk to people on the Internet from dating apps or social media platforms. However, not a lot of people know just how dangerous this could be. Scammers steal photos from public accounts and social media influencers and pretend to be the people in the photos. They also create fake personalities and names then message their victims claiming to be that person. This is why on World Photo Day we show you why it is important to know how to perform a reverse image search in order to verify the identity of the person you are talking to.

What a Reverse Image Search Does

Running an image search on Social Catfish is nothing like that standard Google image search you might be used to. Social Catfish uses image metadata and proprietary technology to scan several social media profiles and find out where your image came from. Our technology scans sites like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, forums, dating apps, and other networking sites to find the image you are looking for. After scanning these sites, they will round up the results and display them in an easy-to-read view.

This ensures that you will get the most accurate results from the most public websites across the Internet. Running an image search is ideal if you are talking to someone online and want to verify if their photo matches the name of the person you are talking to or if there are many results on the Internet. You can also find out if someone is using your image or work without you knowing. Once you submit an image in the search bar, it will only take a few minutes to complete.

How to Perform an Image Search on World Photo Day

  1. Make sure you are on the Image tab of the search bar
  2. Upload the image you would like to search.
  3. Hit enter and wait a few minutes.
  4. Choose the image search membership option and fill out your information.
  5. View your results within minutes!

What To Do If The Image Has A Lot of Matches?

If an image search comes back having multiple results, then this image is being used on a lot of social media sites, dating apps, and other public websites. This usually means that the person you are talking to with that image isn’t who they say they are.

If this happens to you, it is best to block the person you are talking to who stole these images. They are most likely only talking to you in hopes that they can gain access to your bank account.

If you already did give them money, then the best thing to do is to block and report them. You can report them on the social media profile you are using, but it is also important that you also file a complaint with the FTC and IC3. They will be able to give you resources on how to recover from the scam that you experienced.

What To Do If the Image Has No Matches?

This means that the image is nowhere to be found on social media networks, dating apps, or other public websites. While this may mean that you are talking to someone who is being truthful about their identity, it could also mean that they stole the photo from a source that is not as well known.

To be sure you are talking to someone that is legit, make sure to video chat them or meet them in person before getting into a serious relationship with them. It is also important to never send them money if they ask. If they do this, then they are most likely a scammer who only cares about your bank account.

Social Catfish is Here to Help You on World Photo Day!

At Social Catfish, we want to help you verify the identities of those who might seem suspicious to you. If you have their name, email address, phone number, social media username, or image, you can reverse search and see who the suspected person was that you’ve been in contact with while learning how to perform a reverse image search. If you’ve ever been a victim of a scam make sure to report it to the FTC for additional support.
