Sally was in a tough spot. She and her daughter Jennifer came to Social Catfish because she needed help sorting her situation out. She was in a four-year relationship, but every time her boyfriend tried to meet up with her they ran into trouble. What’s worse, she never even talked to her boyfriend over video chat. But Sally describes herself as someone who is in love with love, so despite all this, she was willing to go through the ups and downs of the relationship and endure all of the struggles in hopes of one day finally meeting Marcelo in person.
Sally made some serious changes once she met Marcelo on TInder. It wasn’t long before she started taking all of the profits from her successful business and sending it to him overseas. “I was sending him every dollar I could get my hands on,” Sally said. The reason she started sending the money is the unusual part. Every time Sally tried to meet up with Marcelo, there would be an emergency. He claimed to be an exotic car dealer. Sometimes his cars would break down and he’d get stuck in a foreign country. Sometimes he would claim that there was an emergency and she needed Sally’s help to pay his employees. One time, he even claimed that the cops pulled him over and found drugs in his car, so he needed her help to get out of jail.
The surprising part is before Sally sent a single penny, she know that it was a scam. In fact, Sally told the Social Catfish team that she had talked to 13 other scammers in the past, but she had never sent any money. The one time she was planning on sending $5,000 to a scammer, the bank stopped her by blocking the transaction.
But Marcelo was different than all of the other scammers. He said and did the small things that put doubt in her mind. He made her feel heard and listened to. So at first, Sally would fight him when he based her to send money. Then she would just hesitate to send it. But soon, she was sending everything she had. Even refinancing her house to get more money than she would eventually send. All of this is because of smooth words and Marcelo making her feel heard. By the end of the scam, Sally sent over $120,000.
During our investigation, we found the real man in the photos. His name was Stefano, and almost every picture that the scammer sent sally was on his Instagram page. With this information, sally decided that it was finally time to move on. She broke it off with the scammer and moved closer to family. Today, she has no contact with Marcelo.
