Discord Nitro Scam

Nitro is a Discord service that users pay for, providing them with premium server features. According to Discord, scammers will DM users with real links to other servers. They will then mix in scam links with the real links, and once the person clicks on a scam link, they will be taken to a malicious website. Nitro is a common target in Discord scams

In Nitro scams, when a user presses on the link for free Nitro, their account is compromised. These accounts then send out the same messages and link to their friends, making it seem as though the friend was legitimately sending a gift of Nitro. As it appears the gift is coming from a friend, users often have no questions about pressing on the link, thereby perpetuating the scam further. 

Another Discord Nitro scam message informs the user that they have some Nitro left over. This often intrigues the user enough to get them to press the link for their Nitro, only to find they’ve been caught up in a phishing scheme. 

These links work by replacing a simple letter in the URL which sends the user to the website the scammer wants them to visit instead of to Discord. Once the user is on the fraudulent website, they are prompted to enter their log-in information. However, instead of logging into Discord as they think, they are just giving their information to a scammer from Discord. 

To avoid the Discord Nitro scam, use two-factor authentication on your account. You will also want to set up message scanning which deletes content deemed inappropriate. You’ll also want to remember the blocking feature. If you are approached on Discord by someone offering you Nitro, block them in order to stop their communications.

Discord Careers Scam

Another common scam on Discord is the recruitment scam. In this scam, companies and individuals are posing as Discord to offer job opportunities to users. Interestingly, this scam often takes place using another popular platform such as LinkedIn. 

In this scam, users are presented with a job opportunity and asked to provide information in order to apply. Posing as Discord jobs, the scam asks the user to share personal information including bank details and other companies you’re connected with. Users may also be asked to pay a small fee for assistance with their job applications.

When users provide this information, they are giving it away to a scammer and could end up losing a great deal of money. 

If you have been approached on Discord by someone claiming to have a job opportunity, save your messages and contact Discord security. Whatever you do, don’t engage with the account, don’t send money, and don’t give them any information about you.

Discord Steam Scams

Steam Card scams are one of the most common scams out there. If you’re not familiar, steam cards are gift cards that are used on the Steam network. These cards are typically used to buy PC  games and redeem the money on the steam network. Scammers get their targets to send them these gift cards so they can sell them for cash.

Discord scams are nothing new. Discord users have been targets of scams in the past. In July 2019, 2,500 user accounts were hacked and used to send phishing scam links to thousands of users. This phishing scam often took users to a page that appeared to be the Steam login. But in reality, the page was created for the sole purpose of stealing the information of anyone who tried to log into their steam accounts from that page. These landing pages were then used to steal the accounts of the people login in. They then took those accounts and used them to hack other accounts. The hacked accounts hacked another account by sending out links claiming to be giving away skins for the popular computer game CS go.
