Nancy’s Romance Scam

Nancy was in a tough situation. Her partner had recently been diagnosed with cancer. Nacy was taking care of him in their home, and it seemed like he was entering his last days. The burden of seeing him in his depleted state weighed heavy on Nancy so she turned to scroll through Facebook to relieve some of the constant tension that the situation was putting on her.

While scrolling through Facebook, nancy met a man named Adam Chris who was living in Kuwait with his son. He said that he liked her pictures and her personality piqued his interest. They talked for a while and then began to form a deeper connection.

Nacy liked Adams’s style but she wasn’t looking to online date. Her partner was still alive, and she was still taking care of him so she couldn’t allow Adam to occupy too much of her attention. But when her partner died from his illness, Adam was there to fill the void.

Adam Takes Over After Nancy’s Partner’s Passing

The more Nancy talked to Adam, the more she fell for him. He was well dressed and he seemed to be well off financially. With Adam being a younger man, Nancy was concerned about the age difference between them. She felt as though she was too old for him. Adam Assured her that the age difference made no difference to him, and he would be happy to be with him despite the generational gap.

As the weeks went on, Adam said he had to move back onto the oil rig. He was headed to the coast of Rome, and his son was headed back to boarding school. Once he arrived, Nacy got suspicious. She asked him to send her pictures of the coast, but he made excuses. “We can’t take pictures on the oil rig” he told her. Nancy went along, but this comment raised her suspicion. Instead of receiving pictures off of the coast, she got selfies of him laying down in his room, and a picture of him leaning up against a guard rail on an oil rig.

The next time Nancy got suspicious is when Adam told her that he has a heart condition, and he told her that he dropped his heart medication on the oil rig. Nancy didn’t take the bate. But a couple of weeks later, he told her that he was completely out, and asked her if she could help him get more. This time, she would finally help him.

Because at this point, her trust in Adam had started to decline, she decided that she would send him American Express cards because they couldn’t be traced back to her. But because these cards had a $500 limit, she would have to go to many stores around town to get enough cards to send to him. In total, she sent him $5,000.

The Request Didn’t Stop, And The Harassment Began

After Nacy sent money the first time, the requests wouldn’t stop. He wanted more. He would come up with more unbelievable stories for why she needed to send him money. If she said no, he would guilt her until she had to stop answering. Nancy felt like she couldn’t tell her family, so she felt all alone. But she finally reached out to Social Catfish to get closure on the situation.

Once we received nancy’s story, one red flag jumped out to use from the begging. “Adam Chris” was someone we’ve seen over and over in countless scams. the photo of him leaning up against a guard rail on an oil rig is one of the most catfished photos in the history of the internet.

We also sent a tracker to the scammer to narrow down his exact location. This scammer was savvy. He was using a VPN, but after a while, we got a hit on his real location. Lagos Nigeria. This city in Nigeria is the epicenter of romance scams. Much of the romance scams that we investigate on a daily basis originate from this single city in Nigeria.

At the end of all of this, Nancy walks away with her head held high. She lost $500 in this scam, but she was able to distance herself emotionally when she felt like things weren’t adding up.
