Social Catfish Confronts a Nigerian Romance Scammer in Interview!

Amy is an associate marriage family therapist who has three children ages 16, 19, and 22. She had just broken up with her boyfriend and decided to go on Tinder since she felt lonely and vulnerable. She met Harry on the dating app and complimented him on his hair. From there, they hit it off and texted each other all the time. He claimed that he lived in Coronado and was an architect. While he was sweet and nice, he kept asking Amy for money. She reached out to Social Catfish for help figuring out whether he was a Nigerian romance scammer or not, and this is what we found.

What Made Amy Fall in Love With the Suspected Nigerian Romance Scammer?

Screen-Shot-2021-05-26-at-1.15.19-PM

At first, Amy didn’t think he was a romance scammer. He wanted her to go to his supposed house, but she refused because she said she wouldn’t do that on the first date. He told her that was fine because he would just have to drive and see her then.

She was talking to him all week long after they first started talking, and he would send her poetry to sweep her off her feet. He would send her pictures and videos telling her how much he cared about her and that he felt this connection with her. He told her he’s never felt so happy in his life. He texted her one day that he loved her and she felt like she loved him too.

After this happened, her friend, Cat, told her that he might be a scammer. Because of this, Amy started reading up on it, but since he didn’t ask her for money she didn’t feel like he was a scammer. Cat thought that the guy Amy was talking to was very smooth and she sees a lot of red flags, but also sees that she is very much in love.

When Did Amy Suspect He Might Be a Romance Scammer?

He texted her stating that his bank account was frozen because his construction job is under investigation. He asked if Amy could help him and she agreed to do so. She sent him money which made him very loving and appreciative of her. However, she told him not to ask her for any more money because she’s not going to send it. After this, she’s accused him of scamming her even though he swears he didn’t scam her. He tries telling her that it’s not all about the money. He claims that it’s about love and just wants her to come back.

“He sends pictures and videos that address Amy by name so it’s not like he could just send them to anyone.” Her friend Cat states. However, through our research, we know that this isn’t always the case. Scammers are able to voice over stolen videos, saying whatever they want, and send them to their victims.

Amy would be out with her friends and they would convince her that she’s talking to a scammer. She would then text the scammer “Don’t call me again this is ridiculous. I know you are scamming me.” But then somehow she would miss him.

Cat is interested in how this will turn out because his name and profile all seem like an alias. If Harry is real, Amy would like to meet him in person to see if his feelings are true. She hopes that maybe he’s not a scammer, but just a guy in a really bad situation.

Social Catfish Investigates the Suspected Nigerian Romance Scammer

After we received this video from Amy, our team immediately started investigating. We ran a simple reverse image search on SocialCatfish.com and found the real man in the photos within minutes. Later that night, we had Amy send a link over to Harry. He fell for the bait and clicked the link. When he clicked the link, we were able to track exactly where he was in the world through his IP address.

Social Catfish ran the IP tracker attached to the link given to the scammer. The IP tracker states that he’s in Lagos, Nigeria on a Safari mobile phone.

The real man in the photos is Harry Geithner. He is an actor, film director, and model from Colombia.  We reached out to him about this fake Tinder account that was used to scam Amy out of her hard-earned money.

When we reached out to the real Harry Geithner, he said that he has been dealing with this issue for a long time. He gets emails each week from disappointed women who were scammed by scammers who stole his images. He gives us his support and is glad that he could help us with this matter.

Amy wants to know who the true Harry is and came to our office to find out. She was nervous and scared about finding out the truth, but she wants to know so she can move forward.

The Interview With Social Catfish

Our team showed Amy how we were able to track the scammer’s IP address back to Lagos, Nigeria. David explained that we are able to give special links to scammers that track the location of anyone who clicks on it. Every device has an IP address that can get tracked to find out where someone is in the world. While scammers are able to spoof an IP address, they would have to connect to a VPN so there’s a process to it.

A lot of times when we send them this link, they click on it for five seconds. Then, they get so nervous and click off of it right away, which is exactly what he did. They look at scamming as their job, they call their victims clients.

A lot of times they believe in voodoo and witchcraft. They believe that if they practice this once they have a victim or client, they can get whatever they want. They will do voodoo rituals for things and make them do what they want them to do. However, not all romance scammers practice voodooism.

Scammers want to prove to each other how skillful they are by getting their victims to send money. Out of 70 rejections from victims, they will still try to get one yes. If you look deep into his Instagram, there are several videos of him flirting with the camera. In order to get clients, they don’t have to talk or change anything they are saying on Instagram. They just need to act flirty to attract victims.

Amy recalls a moment when the scammer and she first spoke with each other on the phone. At first, something didn’t seem right about the call so she hung up immediately. Then, he sent a video of him golfing which she thought was cute, and reeled her back in again.

Social Catfish Confronts the Nigerian Romance Scammer

In the interview, Amy called the scammer in front of David and Linnie. Amy told the scammer that she tried to call him but he wasn’t answering. The scammer replied with he didn’t know what she was doing with her phone. He accused her of blocking him on Skype and that his FaceTime doesn’t work. She replied with she doesn’t know why FaceTime doesn’t work she didn’t do anything.

She asked him what was going on and asked whose photo that was. He responded that nothing was going on and that he was the same person she fell in love with. She asked why he lied about his name, and he said it was complicated. She asked if he could share it with her to prove they have an honest connection and that he loves her before she sends money to him.

He kept saying they were his pictures and came up with the story that a lady was trying to stalk him, so he had to lie about his name and create another hidden profile. While he is good at lying, we know this isn’t the case since David talked to the real guy.

David also spoke with the romance scammer. He asked the scammer for his real name, and the scammer replied that he’s obviously seen his photos. David stated that he talked to the real guy yesterday so he knew he wasn’t Harry. The scammer still stated that it was his real name. David then asked why the IP address tracker stated that he was in Nigeria. All the scammer could reply with was I don’t know. David then asked how do you not know? Then the scammer responded with its weird isn’t it

Then David tells him how he owns a company that works with scam victims and knows that he scammed Amy. David then asked why he scammed Amy. The scammer was silent for a long time then said when Amy is ready to talk to put her on the phone. David then said you don’t get to boss me around. That’s when the Nigerian romance scammer hung up on him.

The Nigerian Romance Scammer Will Try to Scam Amy Again

Screen-Shot-2021-05-26-at-1.23.02-PM

David then told Amy another ploy that scammers like to pull. He told her that the scammer is going to be mean and say what he can to get Amy to stay in love with her. He’s going to tell her that he is a scammer and he only did it because he’s in a bad country and actually did fall in love with her.

David knows this because he could see that the scammer was losing his sense of what to say. The scammer knows he got caught and froze. All he could say is you tell me because he knew he was in trouble. Once the scammer tries to make Amy feel bad, he’s going to get her to scam other people if she can’t give him money herself. David knows this because he’s seen it happen with plenty of victims.

After the interview with us, Amy felt relieved and sad. She feels really sad for the women who lost their homes due to romance scams. She hates that they lost their life savings and she thanks God it didn’t happen to her. She feels disappointed because she felt like she really loved the person she was looking at and she really believed him. However, the more he started asking for money and getting angry when he couldn’t get it, the more she doubted him.

She appreciates Social Catfish due to the reverse image search because she uploaded an image of the guy and saw a match of a photo she didn’t have. That’s when she reached out to us. She felt really nervous and felt like she was cheating on the scammer for a long time. But she loves that we were really comforting and supporting.

When she watched our show, Scamfish, she knew that we were doing it to help people, not make fun of them. She states that she feels gullible, naive, and trusts too easily to some degree but her dopamine levels were high. She stated that when the red flags started popping up, it was already too late for her.

At times she would doubt him, but he still comforted her and made her feel beautiful and loved. This made her feel good to where she wanted to continue with the relationship. They had a lot of inside jokes in their relationship and she did not want to give that up. She states that she’s not good with technology so she would always accuse him of scamming her. Then, she would apologize the next day. However, she would tell people not to tell her that he’s a scammer because she felt so good and was high on dopamine for 3 months.
