John Martin Hill Involved in $80k Online Romance Scam

What is the cost of falling victim to a dating scam? Lisa Goodgames, a woman who used Match.com, lost $80,000 to a man she met on the platform named John Martin Hill. Goodgames shared that Hill gained her trust and ultimately took her money, resulting in his arrest and imprisonment by the police.

Who Was John Martin Hill?

John Hill was an attractive man who was good at conning people. However, the smooth persona he presented was only part of his con. While he seemed legitimate to those he met, police have now exposed the truth, he had changed his name multiple times (at least 4!) and had swindled money from many women, for years.

He met Goodgames in Georgia, and she thought they were falling in love and going to buy a house together. Hill convinced her to give him thousands of dollars on the first week they met. His plan was simple; he pretended to have fallen crazy in love with her and said that he wanted to buy her a home. She gave him the money, as she trusted his claim that he was a millionaire.

The money she provided him with was by certified check, and she also withdrew an additional $8.5k, which she offered him with. What Goodgames didn’t know, is that Hill only had $9.87 in his bank account before her check. He was using her, and it was all about their money! When her funds were given to him, he went on a shopping spree and bought multiple items- from clothing to dining and even a car.

The new loves went house hunting but, as he could not prove he had the funds for the home, the deal fell through. Goodgames began to get suspicious. She tried to search for him through his (supposed) home address, which ended up being a fake proxy address and part of his con. Upset and horrified she’d been deceived, Goodgames took the right steps and gave the police department copies of their conversations (in screenshot form), her financial records, and proof of the money she gave Hill.

While Hill tried to continue running the con (by telling authorities and the court that he sold her a website domain/business), police found out that he had past charges under his prior names (his previous aliases). He also had a track record of posing on social media platforms and Craigslist, saying he was a CEO wanting to recruit high school students or potential employees (often women). He would attempt to collect funds for (he would lie) a background check, insurance, or work-related cell phones and permits.

Hill has been sentenced to 7 years in jail and owes Goodgames $83,500.00. He is not allowed to change his name or have contact with his victim (Goodgames). He is not eligible for parole and has also received a fine.

Are you surprised that a dater would give someone they just met that much money, or have you fallen for a romantic partner quickly before? While Goodgames ultimately followed her intuition and performed a search of Hill’s fake address, many daters don’t realize that’s an option.
