What Type of Profile Picture Do They Have?
The profile picture is one of the first things you see, so it makes sense to thoroughly check it out. A fake profile could have a picture of a celebrity. Another thing to look for is how many profile pictures they have. Most people regularly update their profile pictures. If you don’t see this, it should raise concerns. Not having a profile picture at all is also odd. Consider that unusual and think twice before clicking ‘Accept.’
What Does the Bio Tell You?
The bio of an Instagram or Facebook account can tell you if it’s fake, especially if the profile is using the pictures of someone you know. Oftentimes, these bios will promote some sort of paid service to get people to invest with them. Who Are Their Friends?
You received a friend request because of a friend of a friend of a friend, etc., so there should be someone you know or are friends with that’s also on their friend list. If you don’t see any ‘friends’, think twice. Also, check your own friend list to see if you’re already friends with this person. What Are They Posting?
Never befriend anyone whose posting you have not checked out. That’s a good way to know if you even want to befriend the person. If a profile has a lot of links and shared posts, and none coming directly from them, be cautious moving forward. Scammers never reveal their true selves. They’re busy sharing what others are posting.
What’s in The URL?
A lot of times, when a genuine Facebook account is hacked, the URL will be different from the original. Most URLs will have a variation of the user’s name in them. If it doesn’t, that’s a red flag.
