U.S. citizens who participate in online dating need to be aware and alert to potential love interests online, especially those who claim to be U.S. citizens that are living, traveling or serving in the U.S. military in Ghana. Typically the Ghana scammers will attach themselves quickly to an intimate romantic relationship with the victim.
These scammers target lonely, vulnerable, sometimes older adults that are looking for love. They may also take several months to cultivate the relationship, but eventually, they will always ask for money.

- You met online.

- You’ve sent large sums of money for visas, plane tickets but they can never seem to make it out of Ghana.
- When your friend does try to leave the country supposedly, he gets into a car accident or is detained by immigration officials demanding payment, bribes or proof of a certain amount of cash on hand for travel.
- Your scammer consistently uses the lower case “i”s and broken English that is not equivalent to their supposed life station or education level.
- Generic looking profile picture which is usually stolen online. (use a reverse image search of the image).
- Avoids video chat.
- Contradictory or vague statements about personal life and their past.
