Can Raina Walk Away?

Scammers are crafty tricksters who have a talent for appropriating other people’s images. They can find a picture and make up a backstory and a persona for the person in it. And these stories are often so convincing that some targets of these scams can’t help but go along with them. It’s rare that we have a victim come on the show who is able to see through the noise and escape with their finances in tack, will Raina be one of these people?

Who is Raina?

Raina is the primary caregiver to her mother who is seriously ill. because of her responsibility, Raina hasn’t had a chance to cement a serious relationship in a while. That is until John Clinton came along. John reached out to Raina through Instagram, and the two started talking. Raina notice right away that John would through sporadic fits where he would go off on her and stop texting her for a while. These fits commonly came after she refused one of his requests for money. This was deeply confusing to Raina.

In John’s pictures, he looks like a wealthy man. He had the cars, the money, and the clothes. So Raina couldn’t figure out why he had to come to her and ask for $50 gift cards. Because surely a rich man wouldn’t need to ask his partner for money, right?

She did her research on him and she wasn’t satisfied. She found out that he was stealing someone else pictures, but who was the real man in the pictures? Who was the man behind the text messages? Was John Clinton even real? Raina needed answers, so she reached out to Social Catfish.

Was John Really a Romance Scammer

When conducting our research, we immediately found the real man in the photos. It turns out, that he is a very famous man in a far-off part of the world. In real life, he is the Sheikh Dragasani. We also sent a tracker to the man using his photos to see if his actual location matched the place he was telling Raina he lived in. Once the results from the tracker came back, we found out his actual location was in Logos Nigeria. Lagos Nigeria is a place that often comes up when solving romance scams. Because of the lack of opportunity present in the county’s borders, many people in the region have turned to romance scams and other fraudulent online activities to make ends meet.

When we gathered all of the evidence to determine that this was a scam, we sat down with Raina to present our findings. One of the things that stood out in Rayna’s mind is the fact that she Facetimed with John, and he seemed to be the man in the photos. She said that everything seemed normal on the live stream.

We told Raina that deep fakes are a common tactic used by these scammers. They commonly take videos of celebrities and cut the audio, and talk over the video running on a loop. This is known as a deep fake.

With all of this information, we asked Raina if she was ready to walk away, and she said she wanted to talk to him one last time to tell him that despite his best efforts, he couldn’t get any of her money.
