Previously on Scamfish by SocialCatfish.com, a family was concerned after their mom and wife, Debbie, fell victim to a romance scam. She met her romance scammer while playing an innocent game of SongPop, and started talking to him non-stop. Even though she was married, the scammer made her question how she felt about her husband and whether or not she even wanted to stay in the marriage. He asked for $50,000 to fix an oil rig he was working on, and she gave him the money thinking that she was helping out. Debbie and her family came to Social Catfish to get the help they needed and figured out the man wasn’t real. Click here to go to the article and watch the video below.

One Week Later…
A week later, we decided to interview the family once again to see how they were taking this news. Stacy shared some interesting things about what happened when she confronted the scammer and how it became impossible to block him. Gene and Debbie were reliving the past and discussed how he first found out about everything. Debbie also discusses whether or not she has leftover feelings for the romance scammer and what made her fall for him in the first place. You really don’t want to miss the second part of this story.
Stacy Confronts the Romance Scammer
After we hung up after our conversation a week ago, Stacy didn’t know how to feel about everything that had happened. She had no idea whether her mom was going to believe in what we were telling Debbie, or if Debbie would continue to talk to the romance scammer like she had been doing.
She decided to speak with the romance scammer directly by messaging him on Debbie’s Facebook.
“Leave my mom alone, this is her daughter,” she tells the romance scammer.
“Oh, you’re the daughter that doesn’t want your mom to have happiness,” he replied back.
Knowing that what the scammer said wasn’t true, she blocked him from her mom’s Facebook to prevent her mom from getting scammed further. However, within just a few minutes, another message popped up on her mom’s phone…
“Give Debbie her phone back,” the romance scammer says.
Stacy was confused, knowing that he just blocked him. How could he still message her mom on Facebook?! That’s when it hit her…
She walked over to her mom and asked her if the romance scammer had her Facebook password. That’s when Debbie replied that he had all of her passwords to her online accounts. The romance scammer had come up with one password that Debbie should use for all her online accounts.
Stacy took Debbie to the phone store so that someone could help Debbie get her online accounts back. When they checked Debbie’s email, they saw that there were multiple people logging in and out of her email account from Nigeria.
Stacy has confirmed that Debbie is currently working on her relationships with her family members. She knows that it is going to take time, but doesn’t know if they will ever be the same as they were before. However, they are all trying to make it work.
Gene Finds Out About the Romance Scammer
During a family supper, Gene was saying a prayer about interacting with people which made Debbie think that he was talking about her. She thought that Gene had a feeling that she was talking to someone new so she should come forward. After the prayer, she stated that she thought Gene was talking about her since she had been talking to a new guy named Mark Scott on SongPop.
Gene told her to give him her business by flirting with him. However, he didn’t think that Debbie would take that phrase literally and “give him her business” financially.
Later, Gene got a phone call from the bank stating that there had been large withdrawals taken from his bank account. He was unaware that these withdrawals were taking place, so he went down to the bank the next morning to close his accounts.
As he was moving his accounts to his name only inside the bank, Debbie was in the drive-thru and pulled out $8,000 from their bank account.
“Do you want to tell me what’s going on,” Gene asked Debbie.
“I’m helping the guy I’m talking to with some money issues. If you could just give us another $8,000, he’s going to get a $4 million bonus and will come to get me next week. We are moving to San Antonio, TX,” she begs to Gene.
She was basically asking for $8,000 from Gene so that she could leave him…
Two and a half months later, Gene has no idea how he is going to recover from this.
“I don’t know how to be a bachelor, I haven’t been one since the seventies,” he states.
After all of this has happened, he has stated that he wants a normal life with or without her. He proceeded to show David a photo of his wife and him, stating how much of a keeper she is. After 41 years, he knows that he can’t just turn his feelings off for her.
“I’m leaving a pathway back if she wants it.” Gene states.
How is Debbie Feeling After Finding Everything Out?
“I’m sad a lot… I cry a lot,” Debbie states after being asked about this tragic situation.
Debbie states that she is getting along with her family a lot more after everything has happened. She’s also seen Gene several times. However, she still can’t get over the romance scammer who stole her heart.
She still has feelings for someone who isn’t real. She still thinks about the images that were sent to her, the conversations that they shared, and the things that they were going to do in the future.
She thought back to when her mom was getting surgery in the hospital. Her romance scammer was continuously texting her, showing his support towards Debbie while her mom was in the hospital.
“I’m here for you if you need anything at all, just let me know. I know this is a tuff time for you and I just want to show you that I care,” he replies.
A few days later, she didn’t receive the news she was hoping for. She learned that she had lost her mom, and the whole time the romance scammer was comforting her.Â
“If Stacy hadn’t found us, where would you be right now,” David asks.
“Still talking to those people,” she replied.
To this day, the scammer is still trying to get money out of her. Because of her leftover feelings for the romance scammer, she is unsure about her future with Gene. She knows that Gene is really trying and has tried, but is unsure whether or not she will go back to him.
