Romance scams tend to be costly. In fact, they are one of the most costly internet scams in the world. In this week’s story, a daughter reaches out to us after all of her attempts and preventing her mom from sending money to her romance scammer failed.
Joann met her online scammer on Facebook. He said he worked for the UN and he was doing important work overseas. They talked for months and Joann was really interested in the future that may have had together. Joann wanted to meet up with him in person, but every time they were to meet up, he would tell her that he needed her to send money to cover fees. All of these travel fees were something that Joann had never heard of, but she was so eager to see him that she just kept on sending him money.
Before she knew it, Joann had sent Anthony over $100k, mostly in large payments for fees that were preventing him from traveling back to the US to see her. Joann was running out of money, but Anthony’s request’s just kept on coming. So she asked her Daughter for a few thousand dollars. When she asked her daughter Kristina for money, she was confused at first. When she asked her daughter for money when she asked what for, she told her it was a surprise. At this point, Kristina had not seen or heard much from her mother. because ‘Anthony’ convinced her mom that she and her sister could not be trusted and that she should stop talking to them entirely. It seemed as though her mother was taking his advice. Even though she was reluctant to send the money given her history of making poor financial decisions, she sent her the money anyways
