Luna was hurt and angry. She opened her husband’s laptop and saw that he was talking to another woman. One of his coworkers. Not only were they messaging, but he was also making advances. Luan would not turn away and pretend she didn’t see it, she would need to confront him.
Her husband insisted that it wasn’t a big deal, it couldn’t be real cheating because it was just Skype. “you can’t cheat on the internet” he said. “you can do it too if you want”. Now Luna had something to prove. She was angry and wanted to show her husband that she could find someone too. She wanted to show that she was still beautiful and that men still wanted her.
She set up an account on match.com, and match with a doctor name James Fuller who was working in Yemen for Doctors Without Borders. She was attracted to him. He had looks, success, and a tall frame. He checked all of the boxes.
Luna felt good about their relationship. James fulfilled all of her needs. She said he made her feel like she was in a fairytale because he could say all the right things and make her feel the right feelings at the right times. He told her that he would buy her a home in his hometown and they’d travel the world together.
James confessed his love for Luna almost immediately, but Luna was still hurt by her husband. She felt betrayed and wasn’t ready to open back up. She wasn’t ready to say the “L-word” she says. But she felt deeply for him. They built a relationship of trust.
The day came when James would ask a favor of Luna. He needed to pay his bills, and there was a connectivity issue. He couldn’t get a decent signal in Yeman, so he asked her to sign into his bank account and pay his bills with the funds in his account. When luna signed in, she saw that he had more than $2 million in his account. But there was one problem, every time she tried to use the money to pay the bills, the bank would block it. Because of this, James asked if she could pay the bills with her money, and he would reimburse her.
The bill was over $200,000. But, because Luna saw the $2 million in his account, she trusted him to repay her, so she sent him all of the money he asked for.
After she gave him what he had asked for, things changed. He became harder to reach. He started flaking on the plans they made, and he had a long list of excuses for all of it.
Luna was in a really bad position. She gave everything she had to him. Her life savings, the stocks she owned, and she even considered selling her personal possessions.
She blamed her husband for it all. She says that he pushed her to do the online dating thing because of his actions. And because of this, she lost all of her money to a scammer.
When the Social Catfish team looked into this case, we were able to locate the real doctor in the images. We reached out to him and he told us that hundreds of women have contacted him saying that they were in a relationship with him. None of whom he’s actually met.
Luna is still trying to cope with the situation. She hasn’t told her family or friends about the scam, and she hasn’t even told her husband about all of the money she lost. Even though they have been divorced, they have been forced to move back in with each other because Luna is struggling to pay her bills after falling victim to this romance scam.
