Why Do People Catfish?: The Most Common Questions Answered

As more people become aware of this issue, catfishing is becoming a more common topic of discussion. Catfishing comes in a few different forms, and some forms are worse than others. In this blog post, we’ll go over the types of catfishing, and answer the question of why people catfish.

What is catfishing Online?

There are two main types of catfishing. These are catfishing and catfish scams. Catfishing is when someone’s appearance on social media doesn’t match what they look like in real life. This isn’t because they’re using someone else’s photos, but it is because they use technology to change their appearance. In this type of catfishing, people use angles, lighting, and filters to hide things they may be insecure about. This can help people get more likes, followers, or just make them feel better about themselves.

Another feature of catfishing is people using apps like Facetune, adobe photoshop, And Snapseed to enhance their look or hide blemishes. Because people enhancing their photos using lighting, angles, and filters is pretty much the norm these days, it’s not really frowned upon. But photoshopping images is highly taboo.

Although this type of catfishing is disappointing if you go on a date and you find out it happened to you, it’s generally harmless.

What Are Catfish scams?

Catfish scams are the more harmful types of catfishing. Catfish scams are also known as romance scams. In these types of scams, Scammers create fake profiles using someone else’s pictures. They will then reach out to people and start love bombing them. Love bombing is when someone shows over-the-top levels of affection for you at the very begging of a relationship with the intention of manipulating you.

Once the person is head over heels for the catfish scammer, they’ll start coming up with crazy stories, claiming they have an emergency and they need the victim’s help to save them. The catfisher will always ask for money at some point in a romance scam. It is not uncommon for victims to lose tens of thousands of dollars in these scams.

Why Do People Catfish?

The answer to this question is a bit complicated. But generally, people catfish because they can get a lot of money doing romance scams. However, after dealing with hundreds of romance scams, we’ve learned that most of these scammers come from countries where there’s less economic opportunity, so some people do catfish scams because they don’t have many other options.

The culture of these countries is another reason why these scams take place. In Lagos Nigeria, there are entire companies devoted to tricking people into romance scams. There are even books written on how to romance scam that many of the scammers read and take their tactics from.

Why it’s called Catfishing

The term catfishing comes from the show Catfish on MTV.  In this show, the host helps people who are being catfished by tracking down the catfisher. Before Catfish was a show, there was a documentary by the same name. In the documentary, a man used a metaphor that compared romance scammers to catfish.
