If you’ve ever received a “Snapchat 2FA code” message on your phone, you should know that these messages can be dangerous. Some people will try to use this feature to get access to your account and take advantage of it. Keep reading to find out about this new feature.
What is 2FA, and Why Does it Matter?
Most online sites and services use only one factor for identification: your password. This implies that if someone steals or guesses your login details, they will be able to access all of your information on that site as well as any other site where you use the same password.
2FA, also called multi-factor authentication (MFA), adds a second layer of security by verifying your identity based on multiple factors (instead of just one). In addition to a username and password, 2FA requires you to enter a special Snapchat code text sent to your phone when logging in.
This code is generated either randomly or through another method (like entering the last four digits of your phone number), so it’s certainly more difficult for a hacker to get his hands on it. The biggest benefit of using 2FA is that even if someone tries to break into your account with your username/password combo, they still won’t be able to get in without access to the special code sent to you via text message or app notification. It’s essentially two passwords instead of one—which means double protection!

How do The Scammers Use Snapchat 2FA Codes?
The Snapchat support team has recently warned users about a new Snapchat scam targeting the popular messaging app users that try to get around enabling 2-factor authentication (2FA) by stealing the verification code through fake Snapchat messages. Scammers use sneaky underhanded tricks to get you to hand over your information.
One day, you receive a text from a number you don’t recognize. It’s from someone with an unfamiliar name, and there’s only one sentence in the body: “It looks like you haven’t set up your verification code for login verifications.” After reading this, if you’re like most people, your finger will hover over that little blue arrow next to their message, preparing to navigate away because this person clearly has the wrong number. But then your finger stops, and before you know it, you’re clicking on that arrow and getting an error page. You’ve been had.
Hackers may also pose as official Snapchat personnel or send Snapchat spam messages saying that your account has been locked and that you need to go to a certain website or provide your login code to regain access.

How Can I Protect Myself From Snapchat 2FA Code Scams?
To avoid becoming a victim of identity theft, follow these steps:
- Consider checking any site that requests you send your phone number when signing up (most ask for it by default). It’s possible that the site is just trying to verify your account.
- Don’t use a public computer to log in. Using public computers can put your security at risk. It’s best to use a private computer that only you can access, such as your home computer or laptop.
- Use two-factor authentication whenever possible on social media sites like Twitter and Facebook — even if it’s not required by default!
If you have a phishing scam or a scammer on Snapchat, here’s what to do:
- Close your Snapchat app.
- Open your phone’s settings, then go to Applications > Applications Manager and find the Snapchat app in the list. Tap it, then tap Uninstall.
- Reinstall Snapchat from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. If you can’t find it there, look for Snap Inc. If you don’t see either of those options, try searching for “Snapchat” in Google or App Store search instead of looking for the official app. This may help prevent phishing scams from installing on your device.
