Vera’s Nigerian Romance Scam Story
We jumped on a Skype video call with a lady named Vera, who thought she was talking to Greg S. Reid online for over a year, but in reality, she was talking to a Nigerian scammer.
They began messaging each other online back and forth on Facebook Messenger and eventually moved on to texting.
They went on just talking, and they would make phone calls, but he never wanted to do a video call. He always had an excuse.
For example, the scammer would say that the camera was broken, or his phone wasn’t working just right.
That’s when Vera became suspicious of him. She would think:
So I thought okay, well he was an electrician, supposedly by trade and I thought, well if he's an electrician, he should be able to afford a phone.
Eventually, he agrees to video chat with her:
You know, me just thinking still it was a white male from Ohio. Well, he turns his camera on and this isn't being mean, but it was quite funny at the time, because I'm like, all I can see is the whites of your eyes, you know, you've heard that saying before too you know? And I said, turn the flashlight on your phone and then he says it doesn't work.
They are not in communication to this day. Vera blocked the scammer.
In Vera’s words:
I hate that there are stories out there where women, I mean, thousands and thousands of dollars, and you see these and it's just not in Nigeria.
According to Vera, you a red flag that if the person you’re talking to online is a scammer is by paying attention to their choice of words and they’ll fall “in love” with you very fast.
It's just like, oh I love you; I love you; I'm like hey, I've only been talking to you for a couple of hours.
They might ask, have you eaten? They’ll put “eating” instead of eaten.
Vera also asked his catfisher if he went to school in the United States or somewhere else and call them out on their accent.
They also have no idea, where the cities or States are. They’ll say “I’m from Texas”, and then they’ll say, “well is that in California?”.
They don’t do their research well, but you can so you won’t become a victim like Vera by using Social Catfish’s reverse image search to verify the identity of the person you’re talking to online.
