Going through a divorce can be one of the most emotionally trying experiences in a person’s life. Rena thought that she had found the love of her life, but as time went on, her marriage became passionless, and her partner lost interest. After making the difficult decision to separate from her husband, Rena turned to the internet in search of something that was missing in her life. That’s when she met Matthieu, a charming and attentive man who made her feel valued and loved. However, their whirlwind romance took a dark turn when Matthieu began asking for money, and Rena ended up losing over 25k to a catfish scam. This is the story of Rena’s journey from love to loss, and the lessons she learned along the way.
How Rena Got Catfished: What Happened?

Rena’s initial conversations with Matthieu were filled with excitement and a newfound sense of connection. They talked about everything under the sun, and Rena felt like she had finally found someone who truly understood her. However, it wasn’t long before Matthieu began asking for money. He claimed that he needed the money to pay off debts or to cover unexpected expenses, and Rena, who was feeling vulnerable and alone, felt compelled to help him. She started by sending small amounts of money, but it wasn’t long before the requests became more frequent and the amounts more substantial.
Despite the fact that Rena had never met Matthieu in person, she was convinced that he was the love of her life. However, as time went on, she began to get suspicious. Every time she suggested meeting in person, Matthieu would come up with an excuse not to. It wasn’t until she did some investigating, with the help of Social Catfish, that she realized that the man she had fallen in love with didn’t even exist. Rena had been the victim of a catfish scam, and she had lost over 25k in the process. Social Catfish ran a reverse image search on Matthieuand found results under the name Frank Beumer who happens to be an entrepreneur, financial advisor and senior partner at a company called HORBACH located in Germany. Another reverse image search was conducted on Matthieu’s plane ticket to California from Turkey and the results showed that the exact image was used on multiple blog websites. The Ministry of Turkish Customs document had several misspellings and errors throughout the document. Social Catfished discovered that the signature of the authorized officer is also the signature of a character in Star Wars, “Arhul Hextrophon”.
The experience left Rena feeling ashamed, embarrassed, and heartbroken. She had been so convinced that Matthieu was real and that their love was genuine, that it was hard for her to accept that she had been duped. However, over time, Rena began to heal and she learned some valuable lessons from the experience. She realized that it’s important to be cautious when it comes to online relationships, and that if something seems too good to be true, it probably is. Rena also learned that it’s important to take the time to heal from a divorce before jumping into a new relationship, as the emotional vulnerability that can come with a divorce can leave individuals susceptible to scams and other forms of exploitation.
