text message asking for PayPal info. checked with PayPal confirmed it's a scam

Probably a spoofed number - I get these calls often, by the same crew wanting to speak to people in the IT Department but they haven't the proper contact name. Mostly I say 'no' when they ask me to connect them to so & so but when I engage they'll tell me to check the global directory.
