Decoding area codes and phone numbers
Prefix/Area code
eg. XXX – XXX – XXXX
Each phone number can be broken down in 3 parts. The prefix, or area code is specific to each state. For example, the 213 area code is specific to California, where the 212 area code is specific to New York. All phone numbers are regulated and allocated by the North American Numbering Plan Administration (NANPA). There are a potential of 1,000 area codes but, only about 1/3 of them are in use today.
Secondary/Phone carrier information
eg. XXX – XXX – XXXX
The secondary part of a US phone number is the carrier information. Each carrier owns a specific number(s) and you can identify the numbers based off of that information.
Local/Subscriber number
eg. XXX – XXX – XXXX
The last four digits of a US phone number is the subscriber number. This is the number assigned to each person when they purchase a new phone number in a specific area code.
