An IP address is a location where a user is sending messages from Not presented as a street address, but a more general geographic area. According to Dictionary.com, an IP address<\/a> is, \u201ca code that identifies a computer network or particular computer or another device on a network, consisting of four numbers separated by periods.\u201d<\/p>\n

Why would anyone want to know how to find someones IP address?<\/h2>\n

For those who suspect they have been victims of online scams or catfish<\/a>, this information can be invaluable. It can give the victim the proof they are looking for. One example is scammers who lie that they live in the United States or are on vacation, but live overseas or in Nigeria where they seek to take your cash!<\/p>\n

A frequent catfishing<\/a> tactic is for an individual to falsely claim to live in a different state and deceive their romantic partners. Given the high level of deception involved in being scammed or catfished<\/a>, it is crucial for victims to gather as much evidence as feasible. Familiarize Yourself<\/h3>\n

To get started, go to google.com and type \u201cwhat is my IP address.\u201d Google will then display a code, separated by dots, which tells your public IP address. This is your phone or computer\u2019s IP address and is only relevant to your search<\/a>, as it shows you the type of code you\u2019ll be looking for next.<\/p>\n

Search IP Address Through Email<\/h3>\n

Searching the \u2018header\u2019 of emails used to give the sender\u2019s IP address<\/a> easily. Unfortunately, as technology has expanded, many email servers now privatize that information, making it harder to figure out. Other times, experienced catfish or scammers use proxy servers to hide where they are.<\/p>\n

If the person you\u2019re emailing uses Gmail through the web, Gmail will not expose the originating IP address, and their Gmail sent email will show their Google IP instead. AOL is one provider which makes originating IP easier to find, while sites like Hushmail privatize theirs. Here is how to search through popular email<\/a> servers:<\/p>\n

If You\u2019re Using Gmail<\/h3>\n

Go to the email you received and select the downward arrow. Then choose \u2018Show Original.\u2019 Look for the information at the bottom of the page, which will show many numbers and return codes. Typically you will look for \u2018Received: from.\u2019 The IP address will be listed after this, between square brackets [ ]. If You\u2019re Using Yahoo<\/h3>\n

Go To the email you received and select \u201cMore\u201d from the top of the screen. Next, select \u201cView Full Header.\u201d<\/p>\n

Typically you will look for \u2018Received: from.\u2019 The IP address will be listed after this, between square brackets [ ]. You will want the first IP code for \u2018X-Originating-IP.\u2019<\/p>\n

If You\u2019re Using Hotmail & AOL: Go both servers, go to the email you received and select \u2018View Message<\/a> Source.\u2019 For Hotmail go to \u2018Sort\u2019 and for AOL go to \u2018Action.\u2019<\/p>\n

Next, select \u2018View Message Source\u2019 and look for \u2018Received: From\u2019 followed by brackets [ ]. Look for the IP address which follows either the \u2018X-Originating-IP\u2019 or \u2018X-AOL-IP.\u2019<\/p>\n

Should you successfully extract their IP address from the email<\/a>, type it into Google and perform a free IP search. Be aware that you may discover it is only the email server\u2019s IP.<\/p>\n

Facebook Messaging<\/h3>\n

If you are messaging through Facebook, you can attempt to figure out the IP of who you’re communicating with.<\/p>\n

Search for Facebook IP On Windows<\/h3>\n

To do so, make sure your chat is active and go to your computer\u2019s \u2018Search\u2019 function. Type \u2018Command Prompt\u2019 or select: Windows + R > then type \u2018cmd\u2019.<\/p>\n

Next type: \u2018netstat \u2013 an\u2019 and what follows will be a list of IP addresses. Search for Facebook IP on an iMac or Mac<\/h3>\n

Go to the \u2018Spotlight,\u2019 i.e., the \u2019magnifying glass\u2019 icon at the top right of the home screen. Type \u2018Network Utility\u2019 > \u2018Netstat\u2019. Apple also gives you options to search for any IP address under \u2018Network Utility\u2019 > WhoIs,\u2019 to avoid having to consult Google<\/a>.<\/p>\n
