Today threat actors are working diligently to impersonate military individuals or institutions to get away with millions of dollars and sensitive information<\/a>. They have perfected the language and culture of the military members, making it hard to pinpoint them.<\/p>\n

But the military scammers<\/a> use the same scam format making it possible to identify them. This post will outline how you can detect<\/span><\/a> these scams and avoid them being a victim.<\/p>\n

What is a Military Scam<\/h2>\n

The military scam threat is where the scammers<\/a> impersonate military support personnel or organizations to steal sensitive information or money. Among the information that may be stolen is phone numbers, address, name, bank account information, photo identification<\/a>, etc.<\/p>\n

And although the threat target<\/a> military personnel or organizations, anyone can fall victim. As such, everyone should be wary of these scams<\/a> and be ready to prevent or handle them when they appear.<\/p>\n

Military Scam Photos<\/h3>\n

The <\/span>photos <\/span>for <\/span>these <\/span>catfish <\/span>scams <\/span>are <\/span>the <\/span>most <\/span>important <\/span>part. <\/span>Scamfish <\/span>typically <\/span>takes <\/span>photos <\/span>from <\/span>Instagram <\/span>influencers <\/span>who <\/span>are <\/span>in <\/span>the <\/span>military. <\/span>The <\/span>military <\/span>scam <\/span>pictures<\/span> are <\/span>of <\/span>both <\/span>males <\/span>and <\/span>females. <\/span>Scammers <\/span>typically <\/span>get <\/span>these <\/span>photos <\/span>from <\/span>Facebook, <\/span>Instagram, <\/span>and <\/span>Twitter. <\/span>They <\/span>then <\/span>create <\/span>fake <\/span>accounts <\/span>and <\/span>begin <\/span>reaching <\/span>out <\/span>to <\/span>people <\/span>via <\/span>DMs <\/span>or <\/span>comments. <\/span>Many <\/span>of <\/span>the <\/span>people <\/span>in <\/span>these <\/span>photos <\/span>are <\/span>unaware <\/span>that <\/span>their <\/span>images <\/span>are <\/span>being <\/span>used <\/span>in <\/span>dating <\/span>scams<\/span>. <\/span>Others <\/span>have <\/span>been <\/span>contacted <\/span>by <\/span>people <\/span>they’ve <\/span>never <\/span>heard <\/span>of, <\/span>claiming <\/span>that <\/span>they <\/span>have <\/span>been <\/span>in <\/span>a <\/span>relationship <\/span>with <\/span>them <\/span>for <\/span>years.<\/span><\/p>\n

Because <\/span>these <\/span>scammers <\/span>can <\/span>claim <\/span>to <\/span>be <\/span>in <\/span>the <\/span>U.<\/span>S. <\/span>Army <\/span>and <\/span>deployed <\/span>overseas, <\/span>they <\/span>can <\/span>come <\/span>up <\/span>with <\/span>all <\/span>types <\/span>of <\/span>excuses. <\/span>It <\/span>makes <\/span>it <\/span>easy <\/span>to <\/span>explain <\/span>why <\/span>they <\/span>can’t <\/span>video <\/span>chat, <\/span>meet <\/span>up, <\/span>or <\/span>give <\/span>exact <\/span>details <\/span>about <\/span>where <\/span>they <\/span>are <\/span>and <\/span>what <\/span>they’re <\/span>doing. <\/span>To <\/span>find <\/span>out <\/span>whether <\/span>or <\/span>not <\/span>someone <\/span>you’re <\/span>talking <\/span>to <\/span>is <\/span>a <\/span>romance <\/span>scammer<\/span>, <\/span>use <\/span>catfish <\/span>face <\/span>recognition<\/span> by <\/span>running <\/span>their <\/span>images <\/span>through <\/span>the <\/span>search <\/span>bar <\/span>below. <\/span>In <\/span>just <\/span>a <\/span>short <\/span>amount <\/span>of <\/span>time, <\/span>you <\/span>can <\/span>have <\/span>the <\/span>peace <\/span>of <\/span>mind <\/span>you <\/span>need <\/span>to <\/span>save <\/span>yourself <\/span>thousands <\/span>of <\/span>dollars <\/span>and <\/span>lots <\/span>of <\/span>heartache.<\/span><\/p>\n
