How much do you love your grandma? We are guessing a lot! Unfortunately, for a 67-year-old Western Australian grandmother, named Jette Jacobs didn’t receive the love she deserved.
For Jette, looking for love resulted in being scammed out of more than 90,000 dollars and death! If you don’t want your granny to end up broke or worse, read how crossing paths with Jesse Orowo Omokoh ruined her life and was the one mistake she couldn’t undo.
This story has a good ending, only in the sense that authorities from Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) sought justice and arrested 28-year-old male Nigerian suspect, Omokoh, in 2014.
He allegedly defrauded Jacobs out of 90K through a romance scam. They also found him implicated in over 30 cases of victim fraud, considering him part of an organized crime network operating internationally.
The rest of the story, however, is tragic.
Jette Jacobs Murdered by Scammer
In 2002 Jacobs lost her husband. She tried to find love again and did, but that partner passed away in 2009. Not wanting to give up on finding someone special to spend her life with, Jette Jacobs began looking for love online. Jacobs thought her luck had changed when she started speaking to a man from Nigeria.
He went by the name Jesse Orowo Omokoh. Their online relationship lasted for over four years. Though she denied giving him money, to her friends and loved ones, she sent him about 80K during this period. Everyone knew it was a scam, except her. In her mind, all seemed well, and she even went to visit him in Johannesburg, South Africa in 2010.
Unfortunately, that would not be the last trip she took, and she went to see him again, hoping he could get a visa to come and see her. In her mind, they would marry, and he would come to live with her in America.
Meanwhile, while she was in Africa, her mailbox received a letter from the Western Australia Consumer Protection saying that she may be a victim of fraud, due to the massive amounts of money she was sending to an African country.
Unfortunately, she never got this letter. Two days later, while Jacobs was in Africa, she was found dead in her hotel room. Her credit cards, jewelry, laptop, computer, money, and other items were missing. Police declared the circumstances of her death suspicious and continued to investigate.
Don’t let yourself or someone you loved is scammed online or tricked into sending money to a Nigerian scammer or catfish. Background check who you are talking to, even if they seem honest. Romance scams cost users millions of dollars yearly.
