How to Get Verified on Instagram

As you’re scrolling through Instagram, you might have noticed that many of the people you follow have blue checkmarks next to their usernames. If you see plenty of these on your feed, then that means you are following the real accounts of the business, celebrity, or public figure you think you are following. However, if the business, celebrity, or public figure that you follow doesn’t have a blue checkmark, this could possibly mean they are a scammer. That’s why if you’re a public figure, a celebrity, or own your business, it is important to know how to get verified on Instagram to reassure your followers that you’re the real deal.

Why Is It Important to Get Verified on Instagram?

If you are just an average user on Instagram, then there’s no need to get verified. However, if you’re a public figure, business, or celebrity whose images are used all the time to create fake profiles, you might want to consider it.

Getting verified on Instagram allows users to know that you are who you say you are as they scroll among a sea of fake profiles using your images. It allows them to feel safe and confident in the fact that they are following the right profile on Instagram.

All a blue checkmark does is verify that the identity of a business, celebrity, or public figure is real. It does not recognize, show importance, or recognize authority to a specific business, public figure, or celebrity. This proves that Instagram does not favor any account over another and will not cherry-pick who gets verification status as long as they show proof that they are who they say they are.

What Do I Need to Get Verified on Instagram?

Instagram takes a lot of factors into consideration when deciding whether or not to verify a page. These include:

  • An account needs to follow Instagram’s Terms and Conditions and their community guidelines.
  • It needs to be authentic and represent a real person or business.
  • It needs to be unique and represent the unique presence of that real person or business. Only one account per business or person may be verified.
  • Your account needs to be complete and public with a profile picture and a bio. This account also needs to be active and posting frequently.
  • Your account needs to be notable and represent a highly-searched business or person. They will review accounts that are from highly-featured news stories as opposed to paid or sponsored media content.

Once Instagram reviews your verification request, they will send you a notification in your Activity section (heart icon) after 30 days. The notification will let you know whether your request was approved or denied.

If your request is denied, then you need to wait 30 days before submitting a new verification request. If you apply for verification multiple times before Instagram decides, they will cancel your application.

Why Did Instagram Remove My Verified Checkmark?

Instagram has the ability to remove verified checkmarks at any time and can remove them for the following reasons:

  • If you try to advertise, transfer, or sell your badge.
  • If you use your profile picture, bio, or name section to promote services or activities that go against Instagram’s community guidelines.
  • If you attempt to verify your account through a third party.
  • If you switch your account from private to public too many times.
  • If you provide false or misleading information to Instagram during your verification process. This will also put you at risk of your account being disabled.

How to Prevent My Followers From Being Scammed With My Verified Account

  • Make sure to create a post, story, or write in your bio letting your followers know that your account is the only account you own. Any other accounts with your name and picture are fake and used to scam people.
  • Post educational content on your page educating your followers about the dangers of scammers and how they steal your images to scam other people.
  • Leave your DM’s open for victims to keep you updated on the fake profiles and photos that are going around about you. However, don’t respond to any negative messages these same followers might leave.
  • Put watermarks on your photos with your official username so that way if scammers use that photo, they are actually advertising your official Instagram account.
  • Don’t give any financial or personal information to anyone online for any reason. They could use this to commit identity theft, steal your money, or even to create a fake profile using this information.
