Facebook is launching a new dating app. According to Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook “The app is designed to build real long-term relationships, not just hookups.” What makes this app stand apart from other dating sites is that is based on connecting people based on shared events and shared interests.
This feature is designed to set Facebook apart from other favorite sites such as Bumble and Tinder and also compete with OK Cupid and Hing who offer similar options to what Facebook is introducing. Facebook is now competing with the dating websites. Bumble and Tinder give you a deck of cards with a picture name and age with some additional bio info such as occupation on the first face card, but mainly users are swiping left tor right based on a photo.
Meaningful information person related to personal interests and values may be found more profound in the profile. OKCupid and Hinger are a little more comprehensive by listing mutual friends and urging the user to a more detailed survey questionnaire.
Other Features of Facebook’s Dating App
Facebooks dating feature is primarily based on connecting users based on events which are not offered by other sites. The dating feature is separate from the core app but will tie into events from a broader platform giving the user the ability to unlock a game and indicate that they are interested in attending. It is similar to the way people date which is by attending events together.
For example, the users of this feature can browse and unlock upcoming local events. You could see a wine tasting event on Friday night and then there will be a list of matches that are also interested in attending the event. From there you can connect via a text messaging feature that is not related to Facebook Messenger or WhatsApp and possibly makes a plan to meet up at the event.
The app is designed with privacy and safety in mind. Zuckerburg who is in the middle of a company-wide privacy scandal states the new safeguards to protect users’ data, and misinformation is being implemented on the dating app as well.
The dating feature of Facebook would be an ‘opt-in” and “safe” element with all the unique properties of the Facebook platform. The dating profile would be separate from the individuals regular Facebook profile and accessed in a different section of the site. The dating feature only uses the first name and is visible only to others using the service. It is not visible to the users’ Facebook friends and will not show up on the users’ news feed.
Since the announcement of Facebooks upcoming dating app, shares Match stock (who also owns OKCupid) dropped by 21%. A spokesperson for Bumble said the company is thrilled and “perhaps they can join forces with Facebook to make the connecting dating space even safer and empowering.” It should be an exciting time in the dating sites with Facebooks’ new addition.
As with all dating sites, there is still the risk of being catfished. We advise that before you enter into this new dating app, you utilize Social Catfish to ensure that you are not meeting up with a scammer. Let’s partner together to try to avoid unnecessary waste of time and heartache.
