State Introduction

Ontario is Canada's most populous province and economic engine, accounting for approximately 38% of national GDP and hosting the country's capital city, Ottawa, as well as its financial and corporate centre, Toronto. The province's geography ranges from the dense urban corridor of the Golden Horseshoe along Lake Ontario's northern shore — home to over 9 million people — to the vast boreal forests and pre-Cambrian Shield of the north, which cover more than half Ontario's land area. Ontario's economy is extraordinarily diversified, encompassing automotive manufacturing, financial services, technology, mining, agriculture, and a world-class film and television production industry.

With 14.2 million residents, Ontario is the cornerstone of Canadian demographic and economic life. Toronto is the country's undisputed metropolitan powerhouse — the fourth-largest city in North America — and home to the Toronto Stock Exchange, the headquarters of Canada's major banks, and one of the most multicultural urban populations on Earth, where over 200 languages are spoken. Ottawa, as the national capital, houses Parliament, the Supreme Court, and the National Gallery. Hamilton, London, Kitchener-Waterloo, and other secondary cities host significant manufacturing, technology, and university sectors. Ontario's universities, including the University of Toronto and Western University, rank among North America's leading research institutions.

Ontario Area Codes History

Ontario's area code history is the most complex in Canada. When the NANP launched in 1947, Ontario had two area codes: 416 for southern Ontario and 613 for eastern Ontario. A 1953 split created 519 for western Ontario; 705 followed in 1957 for northeastern Ontario; and 807 was carved from 705 in 1962 for northwestern Ontario. Explosive suburban growth around Toronto caused 416 to be split in 1993, giving the Golden Horseshoe suburbs area code 905. Canada's first overlay was implemented for Toronto on March 5, 2001, introducing 647 alongside 416; area code 289 overlaid 905 the same year. Further overlays followed for every region: 365 and 437 in 2013, 226 in 2006 and 548 in 2016 (519 area), 249 in 2011 and 683 in 2022 (705 area), 343 in 2010 (613 area), and 742 in 2021 (905 area). Ontario now has over 18 active area codes — the most of any Canadian province.
