State Introduction

Newfoundland and Labrador is Canada's most easterly province, consisting of the island of Newfoundland off the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the vast, sparsely populated mainland territory of Labrador on the Labrador Peninsula. The province's economy has historically revolved around the North Atlantic fishery and has since pivoted toward offshore oil and gas production from the Hibernia, Terra Nova, and White Rose platforms, along with hydro power from Labrador's Churchill Falls, one of the world's largest hydroelectric stations. Mining, forestry, and increasingly tourism round out the economic base.

With approximately 510,000 residents, Newfoundland and Labrador is the second-least-populous province. St. John's, the provincial capital and largest city, is one of the oldest European settlements in North America and retains a distinct character shaped by centuries of fishing culture, Irish and English heritage, and a famously warm community spirit. Corner Brook on the island's west coast and Labrador City in western Labrador serve as secondary centres. The province's Indigenous communities — including Innu, Inuit, and Mi'kmaq peoples — maintain strong cultural presences particularly in Labrador.

Newfoundland and Labrador Area Codes History

Newfoundland's telephone history is unique because the island was not part of Canada when the NANP was established in 1947 — it did not join Confederation until 1949. After joining Canada, Newfoundland and New Brunswick were initially grouped under area code 506. In 1962, Newfoundland was separated and assigned its own area code, 709, which came into service on January 1, 1962 — one of the simplest telephone histories of any province. Area code 879 was assigned as a relief overlay for 709 and ultimately entered service on February 17, 2024, making mandatory ten-digit dialing a new reality for the province. Newfoundland and Labrador is now served by two area codes — 709 and 879 — both covering the entire province including Labrador.
