British Columbia Map

State Introduction

British Columbia is Canada's westernmost province, stretching from the Pacific coast and its sheltered fjords eastward across the Coast Mountains, Interior Plateau, and Columbia Mountains to the Rocky Mountain border with Alberta. The province's economy is highly diversified, encompassing technology and film production centred in Vancouver, forestry and mining across the Interior, liquefied natural gas development in the northeast, and one of Canada's busiest port systems at the Port of Vancouver — the largest port by tonnage in the country. British Columbia's combination of mild Pacific climate in the southwest and spectacular mountain scenery makes it a major destination for tourism and recreation.

With 5 million residents, BC is Canada's third-most-populous province and growing rapidly. Vancouver is the country's third-largest city and a global gateway to the Asia-Pacific, reflected in the province's highly multicultural character — particularly strong East Asian and South Asian communities. Victoria, the provincial capital on Vancouver Island, is known for its British colonial heritage and garden culture. Beyond the two main cities, centres like Kelowna, Kamloops, and Prince George anchor the Interior economy, while the province's Indigenous peoples — over 200 First Nations — maintain the most culturally diverse Indigenous presence of any province.

British Columbia Area Codes History

British Columbia was served by a single area code, 604, from 1947 through 1997 — a half-century as a single-NPA province. In 1997, rapid growth in Vancouver prompted the province's first geographic split: the Lower Mainland retained 604, while Vancouver Island and the Interior received area code 250. Area code 778 was introduced in November 2001 as an overlay for Metro Vancouver, later expanded province-wide in 2007. Area code 236 was added June 1, 2013 as a third province-wide overlay, followed by 672 on May 4, 2019, and 257 on May 24, 2025. British Columbia is now served by six area codes — 604, 250, 778, 236, 672, and 257 — making it one of the most area-code-dense provinces in Canada.
