State Introduction

Alberta is a western province covering 255,541 square miles of dramatically varied terrain — from the Great Plains and prairie grasslands in the south and east to the Rocky Mountains along its western border and vast boreal forest in the north. The province's economy is one of the most powerful in Canada, driven historically by the energy sector — particularly oil sands extraction around Fort McMurray — as well as agriculture, petrochemicals, and a rapidly growing technology and financial services sector. Alberta's GDP consistently represents approximately 15% of Canada's national output, giving it outsized economic influence despite being the fourth-most-populous province.

With 4.26 million residents, Alberta is home to two major metropolitan centres: Calgary, the largest city and a hub of the energy industry and corporate headquarters, and Edmonton, the provincial capital and a gateway to the northern resource frontier. The province has long attracted internal migrants and international immigrants drawn by relatively high wages and no provincial sales tax, resulting in a younger and fast-growing population. Alberta's culture blends western ranching traditions with increasingly diverse urban communities, major arts institutions, and the famous Calgary Stampede, one of the world's largest outdoor rodeos and festivals.

Alberta Area Codes History

Area code 403 was one of the original 86 North American area codes established in 1947, initially covering Alberta, Yukon, and the western Northwest Territories. On October 3, 1997, the territories were carved out to form area code 867, restricting 403 to Alberta alone. On January 25, 1999, rapid growth forced a geographic split: the northern two-thirds of the province — including Edmonton — became area code 780, while 403 remained for Calgary and southern Alberta. The overlay model replaced further geographic splits: area code 587 launched province-wide on September 19, 2008, area code 825 followed on April 9, 2016, and area code 368 entered service on January 21, 2022. Alberta is now served by five active area codes — 403, 780, 587, 825, and 368 — all overlaying the entire province.
