Cynthia from Vancouver, Canada was married for 10 years and had two kids with her ex-husband. One day, her husband’s anxiety got to be too much for him and he walked out of the picture. She decided that she needed to move on and find companionship with someone else, so she joined Tinder and met Garry Trueman. He also claimed that he lived in Vancouver, Canada so she thought that he would be easy to meet once they were ready. However, he also had a business in the United Kingdom and was from there so his business was also there. One day, he claimed that his business was crumbling. Is he really who he says he is or is he a romance scammer? Let’s find out.
Why Did She Try to Use Tinder?
She never thought she would be dating online again. She was in a 10-year marriage and had two kids with her ex-husband, thinking that she would end up with him forever. She had her kids later on in life and thought she and her husband were doing really well. However, her ex-husband had some really harsh anxiety issues that led him to the decision that he couldn’t be with the family anymore. This led her to feel very devastated and she couldn’t believe she would have to date again.
Her friend encouraged and motivated her to get back out there and date again. She also told her that it could be fun and get Cynthia out of the devastation she was feeling. Due to COVID-19, she thought the best way to get back in the dating world was to go on Tinder and try it out. Back in the day, she felt that she was skinnier and had no kids which led to her having barely any insecurities. When she first started online dating, she felt more insecure about herself and felt like there was a lot of competition out there.
“Tinder is like going shopping, there is a lot of people on Tinder,” Cynthia exclaims with laughter.
How Did She Meet Her Romance Scammer?
After online dating for a little bit and getting to know people, she was just trying to find someone that was real. After a while, someone messaged her and sent her his picture and she was excited that she had found her type on a dating app. They would send each other pictures of one another and letters back and forth, which made her feel like she was living in a fairytale.
They would send each other compliments and stories back and forth, as they were trying to get to know one another. It wouldn’t be short paragraphs like you usually get when texting, but instead, they would send each other paragraphs about their lives. She felt like she was connecting to Garry and never wanted it to stop.
Garry Trueman claimed that he was from the UK and had an engineering background. He claimed to have a 13-year-old son and claimed that he was initially living in the same area as Cynthia in Vancouver, Canada. She thought that it would make it easier to meet up with him one day. They also started talking on the phone every day, which made her fall even more for his accent every time he would flirt with her.
How Did She Find Out He Was a Romance Scammer?
She found out 5 months after forming a relationship with him that he could be a romance scammer. She questioned him about something, and he called her to reassure her of his love for her. He told her not to think negatively of him and that he loved her so much, he would never do anything to hurt her. He was really panicked that she would catch on to his scams and kept trying to distract her with his loving statements.
The next day, he texted her saying he was in a tough position because the project he was on in the UK desperately needed money. He claimed he was stuck on an oil rig and that his credit card stopped working. He claimed that he needed money to get out of the trouble he was in and to get off the oil rig. This confirmed Cynthia’s suspicions that he was indeed a romance scammer.
How Did Her 10-Year-Old Son Know That Garry Was a Romance Scammer?
She was worried about what her children were going to think of her romantic relationship with Garry. She had no idea how her children thought about her dating again, and also didn’t know how they would feel if another child got added to the picture. She didn’t want her children to be jealous or heartbroken that she was dating again.
However, she was honest with her son and told him she made a really bad mistake. She told him that she fell in love with someone that wasn’t real, and he responded claiming he knew that she wasn’t dating a real person. She was shocked and asked her son how he knew that. He then proceeded to show his mom that the pictures of the house the scammer showed her were the same exact pictures shown on a YouTube video he was watching.
How Did She End Her Relationship with Garry?
Cynthia was curious about how the scammer thought she was going to get the money to him and thinks the scammer knew he was busted. He knew that there was no way Cynthia would spare him a dime with the excuse he gave her and knew there was no point in texting her anymore. That’s when he started twisting the blame on Cynthia, claiming that she was a terrible person who didn’t really love him. When he texted her that this was all just a fairytale, he never wrote back.
After they broke up, she angrily took the photo of him by her bedside, threw it into her drawer, and slammed it shut. She also realized that her pictures and personal life stories were shared with a scammer instead of the love of her life. She advises everyone to video chat with the person that you’re talking to on an online dating app to make sure they are a real person.
