After speaking to hundreds of victims and influencers, we understand that it can be devastating to be catfished online, but it can also be hard to have your images stolen. It can leave you feeling violated and used. Because of course, you have been used, often to take advantage of people who have fallen on tough times and are in a vulnerable state in their lives.
This week, we cover a story of two women who have been scammed by the same images and a similar fake story.
Salena and Marsha were both scrolling through social media, not looking for anything special, when out of the blue came a message from a man that they had never seen before.
The Not-so-Slow Seduction
This guy knew all the right things to say and made all of the right promises. Marsha recalls falling for him once he told her that she would be the mother of his child. This is a bold statement to make to a woman you’ve never met (bold, strange, odd, all of the above, however you’d like to describe it) But it was flattering nonetheless, and it sparked Masha’s interest.
Unknown to Marsha, a woman on the other side of the country was having a similar experience. With the same man! But with a different name and a slightly different back story. It turned out that Marsha’s “Frank Sam” was pretending to be Selena’s “James Henderson”. Or was it the other way around?
The man was as much of a smooth-talking straight shooter with Selena as he was with Marsha.
The Method Behind the Madness
Although the names were different, the game he played was exactly the same. Smooth talk, build trust between himself and the victim, giving the women he’s talking to dreams of a future with him. Whether it be babies, a house, or a vacation destination. He fills the specific need he sees in his victim and then once she’s head over heels for him, he asks for what he really wants. Money.
Marsha and Selena both reached out to Social Catfish through SharemyStory@gmail.com, and we were surprised to see that two women were reaching out to us about the same man with a similar story.
We were surprised on one hand, but on the other, not really. It is common for scammers to use the same photos to scam different people. This is how we build the Top Catfish Photos Of November blog post. Once scammers find something that works once, they use it over and over and over again. The face, the story, and the victim may change, but the way they approach these scams stays the same.
Social Catfish gives you the tools to see these scams coming from a mile away. Run a reverse image search on any photo to see if someone is using the same pictures to have the very same conversations with someone on the other side of the world. Protect yourself physically emotionally and financially, with Social Catfish.
