Online dating has become a must-do for single people of the 21st century, especially during the coronavirus pandemic where it’s harder to meet people. People are looking to mingle with someone new to cure their loneliness and turn to dating apps thinking that’s their answer. Because of this, many gay or bisexual men turn to Grindr to meet other men in their area. These men either use it to get into serious relationships with other men or to have a fun night out with someone. Regardless of your intentions, Grindr makes it easy to meet someone from the LGBT community.

When you first log in to their home page, Grindr invites you to join “The world’s largest social networking app for gay, bi, trans, and queer people.” By joining this app, you are guaranteed to meet another man who is a part of the same community as you, giving you an empowering feeling. Grindr is a safe place for anyone who isn’t comfortable coming out of the closet or is still questioning their sexuality. This app allows men of the LGBT community to feel as if they aren’t alone as they converse with men just like them. Grindr is available on your mobile device via an app, or on your computer via their website. Keep scrolling to read through our Grindr review!

History of the Grindr Dating App

On March 25, 2009, Grindr first launched as an iOS mobile app on Apple devices by tech entrepreneur Joel Simkhai in Los Angeles, CA. Originally, the free version displayed up to 100 profiles of men while a premium version of the app displayed up to 200 profiles. Since its release, there have been a plethora of positive reviews about this app that have surfaced on various websites. A few months after its release in August 2009, there were over 200,000 users using Grindr.

After the first year of its release on March 25, 2010, Grindr developed a version of its app for Blackberry devices. Then on March 7, 2011, Grindr released an app for Android devices. Grindr has won many awards and recognition from various sources of the press. For example, Vanity Fair’s Grindr review stated that the app is the “world’s biggest, scariest gay bar.” On June 18, 2012, Grindr had more than 4 million users registered to the app and on March 25, 2014, there were more than 5 million users on the app.

In January 2016, Grindr sold 60% of its stake to a Chinese video game development firm Beijing Kunlun Tech for $93 million. Then in 2018, they sold the rest of their company to Kunlun for $152 million. In November 2019, Grindr developed a computer website version of their app for users who preferred to use their computers to chat with other users. Then in March 2020, Kunlun announced it was going to sell a 98.59% stake of its business to the United States-based San Vicente Acquisition LLC.

  • Many users don’t feel like they need a subscription for the app, making it affordable for everyone.

  • You can only view matches via geolocation, limiting you only to matches in your area.

  • Since profiles are so simple to make, they don’t go in-depth with what you might want in a match like other dating apps offer.

  • There have been some complaints of the text messaging feature being glitchy and not working properly.

  • There have been some complaints of getting banned too easily for no reason.

  • There are risks of meeting scammers, catfish, or unsafe people on Grindr, so use it at your own risk.

Ease of Use

At the time of this Grindr review, the computer version of the site was down. I was only able to access the mobile app of the iPhone. Based on navigating the app, I noticed that it was simple to chat with whoever you want to. You can click their profile and chat away about whatever you want. It has an easy-to-view design where you can view multiple profiles and names at once to figure out who you want to chat with. You can see a section where you can view fresh faces, which are people who are new to the app, or people who are nearby.

Along with this, you can sort through matches by clicking on the filters in the upper-right-hand corner. From there, you can choose to filter people by age, what they are looking for, and the tribes that someone identifies with. You can also scroll through advanced filters to only see people who are online at the moment, who have posted photos, who have face photos only, and who haven’t chatted today. You can also filter people by height, weight, body type, relationship status, where to meet, and many more. You can also filter messages in the upper-right-hand corner by favorites, unread, online now, or group chat.

If you click on your profile and scroll down to settings, you will see that there are options to leave feedback for the app or to get help with a question you have. You can click on Help and scroll through the list of questions the support team has answered to find what you are looking for. If you can’t seem to find the answer to your question, you can contact someone directly from Grindr support by clicking the feedback option, as it allows you to send a message about whatever you want to the Support Team.

How does This Work?

Account Creation

Creating an account is a very simple process. First, the terms of conditions and privacy policy will be available for you to review and accept. Then, all you need to do is enter the email address you want to be associated with your account, a password that you want to use, and a date of birth to verify you are of age to use the app. Once this information is entered, you should be able to create an account quickly and communicate with others on the app.

Site Use

On the website, you can easily view matches and chat with whoever you want to, as long as they are within the same location as you. You can also filter through the people you want to chat with to make it simple to find someone with similar interests as you. Switching back and forth between your messages and the matching screen are simple too, since the tabs are all located on the bottom of your screen. You can also filter messages to find a conversation easier.

There have been many complaints about users’ accounts being banned, even though they claim they did nothing that would cause them to be banned. Some users have even stated that when they received a notification stating their account has been banned, there was no specified reasoning as to why. When these same users have contacted Grindr support to resolve this issue, they have been messaged back stating that the ban will not be lifted.

There have also been complaints about a lack of a verification system that would verify whether or not an account is legit based on their photos and names. Users have also described scenarios on how they met up with unsafe people who stalked them and tried to mug them, so please use this site at your own risk after reading through this Grindr review.

Final Thoughts

While Grindr is easy to use and creating a profile is simple, there are some safety concerns that have yet to be addressed on this app. There is a lack of a verification system that would verify that a profile is legit based on photos and names. This means that anyone could pretend to be someone else and catfish you, then scam you out of your life savings. People could also lure you to a location and cause harm to you by stalking you, mugging you, sexually assaulting you, etc.

Therefore, before getting into a relationship with someone or meeting them in person, it is best that you take the necessary safety precautions. Don’t send money to anyone for any reason and always make sure to meet someone in public a few times before trusting them in a private place. Grindr could be a good place to meet someone from the LGBT community, but always make sure to do so safely. We hope that you enjoyed this Grindr review and stay safe! You never know who you might meet.
