If you’ve been getting repeated calls from salespeople trying to sell you something, chances are you’re annoyed and want to do anything to stop these pesky calls. Thankfully, there is a way to get telemarketers to stop calling you and give your ringer a break. The U.S. government created the Do Not Call Registry in order to block sales calls from people’s phones. In this article, we will examine what the Do Not Call Registry is, how you can sign up, and what types of calls this list blocks.
What is the Do Not Call Registry?
The Do Not Call Registry was created by the national government so that telemarketing calls could be blocked from people’s phones if they chose to do so. It is free to get onto this list and just requires your phone number and email address.
Once you are on the Do Not Call Registry, telemarketers are legally not able to call you. If someone claiming to be a telemarketer is calling you after being placed on this list, then chances are that the person calling you is a scammer.
How Long Will it Take For Telemarketers to Stop Calling?
While your phone number will be on the Do Not Call Registry the next day, it could take up to 31 days for sales calls to stop completely.
Is There an Expiration Date for the Do Not Call Registry?
There is no expiration date for the Do Not Call Registry. Once your phone number is added, it is on this list for life unless you change your phone number or if you choose to remove it.
Can the Do Not Call Registry Block All Unwanted Calls?
The Do Not Call Registry only blocks telemarketing calls, it does not block all unwanted calls. The list gets sent to verified telemarketers to instruct these businesses not to call these numbers. If someone is calling you and says they are a telemarketer even after being added onto the list, chances are they are a scammer.
In order to get fewer of these calls, you need to block those who you feel might be scammers. Cell phone carriers have a feature that will tell you whether or not you are receiving a scam call and will also block suspicious calls.
Also, organizations such as charities, political organizations, debt collectors, and surveys can still call you after being added to the list. Along with this, if you have recently done business with a company, they are still able to call you with a sales pitch unless you tell them to stop calling you.
If you get a sales pitch from a robocall even after being added to the Do Not Call Registry, then this is illegal and is most likely a scam call. The only exception to this rule is if you have given a company written permission to continue contacting you with a robocall.
How Do I Add My Phone Number?
There are two ways to add your phone number onto the Do Not Call Registry:
- You can go onto donotcall.gov, then add your phone number onto the list along with your email. In order to complete this process, you must click a link on your email within 72 hours after signing up.
- You can call 888-382-1222 to register.
